UKYP (United Kingdom Youth Parliament) is a national body made up of young people across the country. In the East Midlands we have 24 Members of Youth Parliament (MYP’s) and 12 Deputy Members of Youth Parliament (DMYP’s). Currently 8 out of 9 local authorities are represented with Northamptonshire allocated 4 MYP’s and 4 deputies.
Young people who are MYP’s are between the ages of 13 – 19 and selected through nominations and elections from their peers. In Northamptonshire each MYP serves two years in post as the election process is bi annual.
In Northamptonshire, the Youth Involvement Team takes responsibility for supporting and co-ordinating MYP meetings and events. Each MYP has a support worker that meets with them individually bi-montlhy offering supervision and advice.
MYP’s responsibilities are as follows:
Each MYP represents their peers in their local areas at meetings etc.
Each MYP attends county UKYP meetings every 6 weeks to discuss joint area planning, target setting, feedback area issues etc.
Each MYP has a mentor who meets with them bi-montlhy to offer support in any UKYP work they are doing in their area.
Each MYP attends regional meetings bi-monthly across the East Midlands Region.
Types of work UKYP’s will undertake include:
Attending national events
Organising conferences
Hosting meetings
Organising local youth surgeries
Taking forward any issues brought to them by their peers and advocating on their behalf
